If you want to feel really small

take a walk under The Natural Bridge like we did

while visiting relatives in Lexington VA a couple weeks ago.

From below,

a tunnel made of granite

was formed by the little creek that is running

along side the path.

The picture above has a white square

painted on the wall.

Rumor has it that

the initials GW are carved there.

It seems George Washington liked to climb rocks.

I'm not kidding.

At one time

Thomas Jefferson owned hundreds of acres

in these parts, as well as the land this Natural Bridge sits on.

I believe the purchase price was $23.

I hope he didn't "flip" it too quickly.

I believe it's worth quite a bit more than that now.

Received some photography tips from my favorite teacher Beth and I thought I'd give them a try tonight.
She basically told me to take the camera off "auto" and play with the ISO and F stop settings.
Very cool.

And then she turned me on the the "rule of thirds" thing, which everyone except me knows about. But I do now.

These supply boats are backed in awaiting the supplies that will be loaded onto their back
deck, for delivery to the oil rigs.

Below is an old sulphur ship that has been changed into a multi-purpose vessel for work
in the oil field. It's owned by company, and may be the ugliest boat I've seen down here.

Below, that name just gives me chills.

I took this in my garden about 2 weeks ago. My purpose was to practice using different depth of field settings that I had just recently learned about from my friend Beth.

State of the Art

One of our company multi purpose vessels gave us a hand today as we were loading equipment onto our barge for the oil spill response project in the Gulf.

The helipad on the front of the wheel house is very unusual.

That big oval shape thingy is a satellite system of some sort.There is one on each side of the wheel house.

The purpose is to provide "dynamic positioning" to the boat, meaning, once they come along side a barge or an oil rig, a computer takes over the handling of the ship . They were right along side us about 5 feet away and the computer system kept them in that exact spot as they used their crane to do a "heavy lift" onto our barge.
It is an impressive vessel.

Above is a supply boat that takes out anything that an oil rig might need to operate.
Below are the portable quarters to temporarily house workers who are involved in the oil spill clean up. The barges are then towed out to the poluted waters of the gulf.

Port Fourchon is at the center of oil rig support and oil spill clean up.

As our tug towed our barge toward New York City from Boston, Massachusettes, the fog started
setting in.
.

In less than an hour, the barge could barely be seen,

Soon, it was invisable. Im sure it's quite unsettling to the mate steering the boat, towing a barge he can't see.

To say nothing of the feeling he must get when he looks out the wheelhouse window and sees nothing.

It's days like these I'm glad I work in the engine room.

What I didn't think about was the effect the vibration of the tug would have on the lights.

Ok, so I'm on the boat and it snows. I'm impressed with the 6 to 8 inches we got.
I take my camera and study the angle of the light, check the settings and focus before taking the shot. I study the result, trying to figure out how to improve my photo.
Upon arriving home, my wife shows me photos she took of the snow she got.
She saw the snow, grabbed her point and shoot.
She pointed and shot.
Darn her.
